Why choose GRO for Change?
When the school bus stops coming there is a need to fill the day. What better way to fill your day than with engaging activities that are valuable to you. Activities that will make your life richer, more productive or more interesting. GRO for Change was developed by a parent of a child with a disability seeing the current options for daily activities, outside of a traditional full time work model, to be lack luster and rather boring. Most individuals with disabilities thrive in a scheduled known environment so that is what GRO for Change was developed to provide.
By creating GRO for Change we are providing a service that is missing from the intellectually challenged community. In most models of service the individual is put into a one size fits all plan. With GRO for Change we will have a framework structure but the actual content will be driven by the participants in the initiative. Through this company we will be able to fill a need in the special needs community for social interaction, meaningful skill enhancement, and continued learning.
What types of skills enrichment should I expect?
No two days will look exactly alike but there will be a framework structure. The activities will be catered to the abilities and interest of all participants. We will visit cultural or community events, learn new skills, build on the skills we already have. Exercise, life skills, and engaging with the community and world around us will be the basic items we focus on. You can expect such things as volunteering at a senior center, food bank or other community group; learning about meal planning, grocery shopping and meal prep, some math, science, art, music, movies, group outings, celebrations and other things will fill out our days. One thing not to expect is boredom – that is NOT on our schedule.
By providing guidance, resources and opportunities to people with disabilities we can change communities, lives and outcomes for those involved as well as within the community.
